Lana Del Rey is no stranger to controversy. The 25-year old indie/alt/pop songstress (whose songs “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” have a combined 15,000,000 views on YouTube and whose recent concert at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom sold out almost as soon as it was announced) set the Internet ablaze this fall with her much discussed backstory, style, and lips.

Exploding onto the scene in mid-August with her strangely entrancing do-it-yourself (re: copyright-infringing) music videos and come hither drawl, Del Rey has quickly become the artist music bloggers love to hate … and love to love.

So it comes as no surprise that her new music video for “Born to Die” - the title track of her upcoming debut album, scheduled for release January 30, 2012 - is both beautiful and divisive.

The Interscope Records-funded, tiger-laden production is something of a cross between Madonna’s 1984 “Like a Virgin” video and Sid & Nancy. Visions of flowing American flags and frescoed ceilings intermingle with shots of Del Rey passionately kissing a heavily tattooed man as they drive down an anonymous (and poorly lit) road, finally culminating with a blood-soaked Del Rey hanging limply from the man’s arms as a fire rages behind them.

Strange? Maybe. Depressing? Sure. Yet another reason to talk about Lana Del Rey? Definitely.
