Holiday’s trailers: ‘Casa de mi Padre’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and Ridley Scott back to ‘Alien’

Not your typical Will Ferrell comedy, Casa de mi Padre arrives in theaters March 16. (Pantelion)

For moviegoers it’s a good problem to have, but for Hollywood it’s just a problem—too many choices too close together this holiday season, and the disappointing numbers at the box office are a reflection of that. Interestingly, Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol has outstaged The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (which we loved!).
Somehow studios felt that bombarding you with trailers for huge 2012 movies this past week was a good plan. Was it really necessary to reimagine the Nicolas Cage-starrer Ghost Rider? Probably not, but giving the Batman franchise a grand finale is definitely in order.
So we sorted through all the junk and picked the four trailers that matter most.
Prometheus
We’re thinking this will do for Noomi Rapace, who currently stars in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, what Star Trek and Avatar did for Zoe Saldana—grant her sci-fi queen status. In Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (due June 8) she plays an archaeologist that’s part of a team of explorers who run into trouble while looking into the origins of mankind. Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba also star.
The Dark Knight Rises
We’re not convinced that Anne Hathaway is the right fit for Catwoman. We say bring back Michelle Pfeiffer as the Cougar—way more terrifying! There’s also the problem that what the masked villain Bane (Tom Hardy) is saying half of the time is unintelligible. Those of us who watched the six-minute prologue voiced that concern, as well as fanboys all around the Internet. But it doesn’t seem director Chris Nolan will alter the sound much, so I guess we’ll just have to live with it. In any case, we’re curious to see what Batman (Christian Bale) can do to save Gotham City. We’re also looking forward to seeing new castmembers Joseph Gordon Levitt and Marion Cotillard, as well as Nestor Carbonell, who returns as Mayor Anthony Garcia. Out July 20.
Casa de mi Padre
Ok so this one isn’t so much a trailer as it is a teaser. Either way, it’s going to be majorly funny. In Casa de mi Padre (out March 16) Will Ferrell is Armando Alvarez, who has lived and worked on his father’s ranch his whole life. Things get messy when his wealthy businessman brother Raul (Diego Luna) arrives with his hot fiancé Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez), starting with the fact that Armando falls for Sonia. Add a druglord into the mix (Gael Garcia Bernal) and it’s true what they say: all’s fair in love and war. The film is entirely in Spanish with English subtitles.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
We learned to live with Guillermo del Toro no longer directing this. And then we saw the trailer for Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings prequel and said, ‘Haven’t we been here before?’ in a non-excited voice. The movie isn’t due until December 14, 2012 so here’s to hoping the marketing folks at Warner Bros. build one hell of a campaign around it. Still, if you’re a diehard -precious- fan of the LOTR trilogy, you’ll be there for sure.
