It’s impossible to predict what’s going to happen in the future—unless of course you’re Nostradamus or the Mayans, and even they might be wrong from time to time (look out for our upcoming report on the Mayan end-of-the-world prophecy by our very own Manuel Rueda).
But even if we can’t predict the future with 100 percent accuracy, there are some things we can see coming, especially since we’ve been paying close attention.
Without further ado, here’s our entertainment outlook for the year that lies ahead. Let us know on our Facebook page if we’ve missed anything!
Pitbull will be featured on the hooks of several chart-topping hits, including, but not limited to, another J.Lo club cut. But because the Cuban American’s formula can only be replicated so many times, 2012 will see his brand power start to plateau, after a year of mega endorsements (Dr. Pepper, Bud Light, Kodak) and his own vodka (Voli).
Speaking of J.Lo, Casper Smart will propose to Jennifer Lopez. She’ll say yes, of course, but later realize she’s been down that road before. The news won’t even be made public until after the break-up.
The reality talent competition format will once again prove itself a strong crowd-pleaser (and ratings draw) with Lopez and Marc Anthony’s show Q’VIiva: The Chosen, which will air on Univision starting January 28. More so than the talent— although Capoeira dancers will be a nice departure from the usual song-and-dance routines on other networks— we’ll be watching for any awkward exchanges between the exes.
Shakira and Piqué will stay a couple, but he won’t put a ring on it in 2012. He’s only 24 after all and we’ve seen what happens with athletes who marry too young (Kobe Bryant, Tony Parker). Shak will continue to give us a window into their relationship via Twitter and Facebook, where she regularly posts cute/verging on annoying notes not dissimilar to those of a teenager in love.
Romeo Santos’s TV show on ABC will be a hit for one season, after which ratings will start to decline. But the bachatero’s acting career will have just begun, as he’ll be cast in Fast Six and Seven, which are headed into production with even more of a Latino spin than the last five movies in the franchise.
Sofia Vergara will expand her empire with a new fragrance titled, “The Essence of Cha Cha.”
After exceeding expectations in 2011, Salma Hayek will expand her beauty line Nuance with even more products, such as a one-of-a-kind, cellulite-busting oil made from several kinds of chili peppers (true story: she makes this oil herself). By the end of 2012, she’ll obtain the proper FDA approvals to sell it on a mass-scale.
Juanes will fare remarkably well with his MTV Unplugged album—on both a critical and commercial level—proving that he’s still a major star in the Latin music universe.
Demian Bichir will get an Oscar nomination for his role in A Better Life. He won’t win, but the nomination itself will mean a great deal for the actor as he signs on to more English-speaking parts.
Jenni Rivera will be a surprise hit among critics at Sundance for her role as an imprisoned mother in the indie hip-hop drama, Filly Brown.
Selena Gomez will stand by her man through even more Justin Bieber baby mama drama—only this time, the situation will get even more complicated as sparks fly between her and her Spring Breakers co-star, James Franco. Will puppy love conquer all? Only time will tell.
The Kardashians won’t go away, sorry to say. Instead, E! will come up with yet another spin-off, this one based on Kylie and Kendall’s new puppies. It will be called, “Kashing in on the Kanines.”
Madonna will bring out Lady Gaga for her Superbowl performance. Together they’ll sing “Express Yourself,” settling any beef onstage once and for all. There will be no girl-on-girl kisses. This is 2012, after all, not 2003.
Snooki will land the cover of Playboy. No one will care or be impressed.
