Um, excuse me, have we met? El Puma’s actress daughter, Genesis Rodriguez, will be a household name in 2012 in Hollywood. (Photo: Facebook)

We all know who made a big splash in 2011: Bruno Mars, Prince Royce, Romeo Santos, to name a few. But that’s so last year. So, now it’s time to look at those names you’ll need to know in 2012 if you want to seem cool in front of your friends.
Dev
You might know her from: The 22-year-old California native of Mexican-Portuguese descent (born Devin Star Tailes) shot up various Billboard charts in 2011 with the heavily synthesized “In The Dark.” But she’d caught our attention in 2010 with the Cataracs-produced ode to the Gulfstream G650 jet, “Like a G6.” The Los Angeles-based production duo discovered her on MySpace in 2008.
Why she’ll matter in 2012: After giving birth to a baby girl named Emilia with boyfriend Jimmy Gorecki in December 2011, Dev is ready to drop her debut album, The Night The Sun Came Up, via Universal Republic in March. Hearing her sing on softer, acoustic songs will be a nice surprise for those who assume she’s just another autotuned product of today’s crowded musical landscape. We’re loving her follow-up single “Naked” featuring Enrique Iglesias.
Diego Boneta
You might know him from: the popular Mexican telenovela, Rebelde and appearances on American shows like 90210 and Pretty Little Liars
Why he’ll matter in 2012: Having landed the role of Drew Boley (an aspiring 1980s glam rocker) in Adam Shankman’s big-screen version of the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, 21-year-old Boneta will cement his status in Hollywood as everyone’s hot new crush. Don’t believe us? Watch the trailer.
Genesis Rodriguez
You might know her from: Being the legendary El Puma’s daughter doesn’t necessarily make for a low profile, but Rodriguez is known for her work in Spanish novelas Doña Barbara and Prisionera. You may have also caught her in Entourage.
Why she’ll matter in 2012: She’ll make the transition from Spanish TV to Hollywood seem effortless. Her upcoming films include the crime thriller Man on a Ledge, with Sam Worthington (out January 27); the Will Ferrell comedy Casa de mi Padre (March 16); What to Expect When You’re Expecting, with Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz (May 11); and the 2013 Arnold Schwarzenegger-starrer The Last Stand. Hope she’s got time for some men’s mag covers!
Teri Gender Bender
You might know her from: Being the singer-songwriter-frontwoman from Le Butcherettes. Teri originally formed the band in Guadalajara, Mexico and now resides in Los Angeles, where in 2011 the band released their debut album Sin, Sin, Sin under the label (and tutelage) of The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez Lopez. In 2011 alone, Le Butcherettes played Lollapalooza, opened for Iggy and the Stooges, The Deftones, Queens of the Stone Age, all over the US and Australia. Not a bad start.
Why she’ll matter in 2012: Teri is out to prove she’s much more than a magnetic performer (aside from lead vocals, she plays the guitar and keyboard) with creative dress-up antics. She is already ditching her once-trademark bloody apron and is currently in the studio recording the band’s follow-up album, to be released in 2012.
Lana Del Rey
You might know her from: The Internet. It seemed as though you couldn’t switch on your computer this fall without reading something about this glam-indie-pop songstress. Del Rey’s homemade music video for her breakout single “Video Games” only needed four months to garner more than 16 million views on YouTube, while the music video for “Born to Die” - her big budget debut - garnered some serious Twitter-love from rapper/producer extraordinaire Kanye West.
Why she’ll matter in 2012: Far from a flash in the pan, Lana Del Rey’s star is going to continue to skyrocket in 2012. She is kicking off the new year with a monster January, performing on Saturday Night Live on the 14th, and releasing her hugely anticipated debut album, Born to Die, on the 31st. If her December show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City is any indication, SNL viewers - and soon, the rest of the nation - better be ready to fall under the spell of Lana Del Rey.
