Back in December, the combined units of Documentales Univision and Univision Investiga premiered La Amenaza Iraní (The Iranian Threat), a 50 min. documentary directed by Gerardo Reyes, head of Univision’s investigative unit, which illuminated the alleged links between the Iranian government and several attempts to attack targets in the U.S. using connections in Venezuela and Cuba.

The seven-month investigation has had quite an impact, leading to a formal request for a U.S. Congress investigation on the The Iranian Threat’sclaims, in addition to last week’s expulsion of Venezuelan diplomat Livia Acosta.

Today, the Venezuela government also announced the closure of its Miami consulate, a measure that will surely hurt Venezuela’s own citizens in the U.S.

“With this decision, neither the U.S. nor Venezuela loses,” Reyes said. “It’s the thousands of Venezuelan citizens who lose, those who were already complaining about the poor service they received from their own embassy.”

So far, the Venezuelan government hasn’t publicly issued any factual response to The Iranian Threat’s assertions, only relying on president Hugo Chávez denials and bravados: “Up until now, they’re airing programs on U.S. television, saying that now Venezuela is setting up terrorist acts together with Iranian terrorists to attack the United States,” Chávez said. “They’re using lies as an excuse to hit us, we must be warned about it.”
