All five Republicans seeking to take the soon-to-be vacant seat of Texas Sen. Kailey Bay Hutchinson (R) faced off for the first time in a debate in Austin on Thursday. The candidates touched on a wide range of issues, including federal fiscal policy and the economy. Immigration was also among the most widely discussed topics, with all candidates agreeing that undocumented immigrants should be sent home and forced to take the proper channels to come to the country legally.

Hutchinson, a Senate veteran who assumed office in 1993, announced that she would not seek re-election in January. The candidates in the race to replace her are Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, former solicitor general Ted Cruz, former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, businessman Glen Addison, and former ESPN football analyst Craig James.
