Mexican authorities say Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and one of the most sought after men by both Mexico and the United States, escaped a recent attempt at his capture thanks to an unlikely aide: a prostitute.
The Mexican daily Reforma reports the prostitute was presumably hired by a third party to service Guzman, then blindfolded and taken to a rented home in Los Cabos, Baja California around Feb. 18. The only other people in the house were a gardener and a cook who had been working in the house for less than a month.
It wasn’t until the gardener went to pick up Guzman at an undisclosed location in the southern part of the Mexican state that the prostitute became aware of the identity of her client.
Cuitláhuac Salinas Martinez, a representative of the Mexico’s organized crime division of the Attorney General’s office, said that after Guzman arrived at the house, the prostitute told him she wouldn’t be able to perform the services she was hired for because she was menstruating. The two agreed to postpone the encounter. Guzman left the property, but the prostitute stayed at the house for a few more days, Salinas Martinez said.
Mexican investigators arrived at the house and arrested the prostitute, gardener and cook on Feb. 21. Salinas Martinez suggested that had it not been for the postponed encounter, authorities might have finally arrested Guzman, whom they have been trying to pin down since he escaped from a Mexican prison 11 years ago.
