Carla Morrison and Clemente Castillo at Vive Latino 2012

On the last day of Vive Latino we stumbled upon singer-songwriter Carla Morrison doing a surprise set at the Garage Indio stage. She was joined by Clemente Castillo of Monterrey band Jumbo for an intimate performance of a crowd favorite, “Calaveras y Diablitos,” by famed Argentine band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

Carla Morrison was one of the stand out acts at this year’s festival, drawing huge crowds whenever she appeared on stage. Her latest album, Déjenme Llorar, drops this week and she told us “it’s a really sad album” that grew out of her personal experiences while touring last year.

“When I was going through that process, everyone would tell me, ‘Don’t cry,’ you know. ‘You have to be strong. You have to deal with this,’ and yeah, for sure, I was trying to deal with it. At the same time, crying helps you to heal your soul.”

Well, there was nothing depressing about Carla’s performance on Sunday afternoon and the crowd loved it. You can see the video here. And later this week we’ll have more from our visit with Carla at her Mexico City apartment where she took time out of her busy pre-Vive Latino rehearsal schedule to talk with us.
