Mash Up: 10 things the VMAs and DNC had in common

By ROMINA PUGA and EMILY DERUY
It was a big night for politics and music last night, with both the DNC and MTV VMA’s taking place on opposite coasts, driving major social media engagement. Interestingly, the two events actually had more in common than you think, starting with VMA host Kevin Hart’s bid for president. But that’s just where the parallels begin…
Understated elegance
Eva Longoria at the DNC:

Under-Dressed Celebs
Scarlett Johansson in a T-shirt and blazer:

Lil Wayne’s bright yellow pants falling off during 2 Chainz’ performance:

“Never Ever” Moment
VP Joe Biden saying ”We must never, ever forget their sacrifice” about veterans:

Taylor Swift performing “We are never ever getting back together” about one of her many ex-boyfriends at VMA close:

Happy 90’s nostalgia
Ashley Judd rocking out to Mary J. Blige at the DNC:

A boy band winning big at the VMAs - the frosted tips are back!

Sad 90’s nostalgia
Green Day proving they don’t have it anymore - they should take a hint from Blink182, “What’s my age again?”:

An aging Wayne Knight (aka Newman) from Seinfeld spotted in the DNC crowd:

Cojones
Rebel Wilson appeared to be wearing one of those typical bikini-body T-shirts, until she moved the bag of chips blocking her crotch area:

Sen. Dick Durbin praised the courage of the DREAMers by saying, “My life has been changed by these young men and women,” at 3:52 in the clip below.
Social Fury
Obama broke a social media record during his speech at the DNC with 52,757 tweets per minute:

Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin of You” performance being the most tweeted moment of the #VMAs:

#Swag
President Obama: “I’m no longer just a candidate. I’m the President.”:
Rihanna brushed her shoulder off when she won Video of the Year:

Empty Chairs
James Taylor took the stage at the DNC, saw the chair, and said, “I know it’s an empty chair. It makes you nervous doesn’t it?”
Ok, so there was no chair, but it did feel empty without her. Kristen Stewart was the only missing member (awk-ward) when the Twilight cast went on stage to introduce a sneak peak at the final installment of the hugely successful vampire franchise: Breaking Dawn Pt. 2 (due this November):

Reflection
Gabrielle Giffords during the Pledge of Allegiance. She brought nearly everyone to tears:
We didn’t exactly tear up, but we were moved during Drake’s acceptance speech for Best Hip-Hop Video (“HYFR”). He talked about being bullied as a kid for being Black and Jewish back home in Canada: “I want to dedicate this award to any kid that’s ever had a long walk home by yourself. This is for you. We made it, bitch!”
